Darwin’s ideal pet-friendly properties

A must-have list for Darwin’s ideal pet-friendly properties was revealed, highlighting properties for sale that meet essential animal-friendly criteria.

Money.com.au ranked the top features for pet-friendly homes, including interiors, yards, and locations, to suit pet owners’ needs.

Mansour Soltani from Money.com.au noted that with 70% of Australian households having pets, buyers prioritize homes catering to pets’ needs.

A solid fence, ranking first, keeps pets safely in the yard and reduces distractions from passing cars or people.

Dr. Grace Thurtell explained that good fencing blocks outside views, helping pets enjoy their yard and reduce excessive barking.

Number two on the list was a grassed area where pets can laze, play, and stay cool.

“Grass allows pets to engage in natural behaviors like sniffing, which provides mental stimulation and helps them understand their surroundings,” Dr. Thurtell explained.

Third place went to durable flooring such as tiles, laminate, or hardwood, which can withstand the wear and tear from pets.

“However, be aware that long-haired dogs, like poodle mixes and Shih Tzus, may slip on hard floors,” Dr. Thurtell noted.

The fourth essential feature was proximity to dog parks.

“Homebuyers with dogs often prioritize properties within walking distance of dog parks or trails,” said Mr. Mansour.

“Easy access to green spaces where pets can exercise and socialize is highly desirable, especially for first homebuyers and millennials.”

Rounding out the top five was an open-plan layout, providing space for cats, dogs, and even birds to move around freely.

Features like built-in pet doors are also valuable.

“A well-designed pet door offers pets some independence and makes life easier for their owners,” Dr. Thurtell added.

“It’s particularly beneficial for dog owners who want to give their pets the freedom to go outside as needed.”
