Family has owned farm by Goulburn River,
A vast property rich in history has been listed for sale. It features a private beach along the Goulburn River.
Originally constructed in 1876, the five-bedroom residence at 696 Back Eildon Rd, Thornton, was purchased by Henry and Maggie Nicholas.
In 1919, they established the 13.5-hectare farm, raising nine children who later took care of the property.
Now, after five generations of the Nicholas family nurturing the land, the owners have made the difficult choice to sell.
Sisters Gail, Shelley, Vicki, and Carole expressed their gratitude for growing up in such a beautiful place with their family.
They said, “We lived in a house across from the homestead. Each morning, we visited our grandparents for tea after milking.”
The sisters continued, “As children, we enjoyed delivering morning tea to the shearers. We loved watching our sheepdogs run across the sheep.”
Inside the main residence, there are two spacious living areas: one informal and one formal. Both open to the wide return verandah.
Additionally, the house includes five bedrooms, four of which feature their own charming open fireplaces for warmth and ambiance.
The property boasts numerous fruit trees, including apple, pear, nectarine, cherry, and peach trees across its expansive 13 hectares.
Moreover, it includes three paddocks, a large shearing shed constructed in 1945, another shed, and a convenient garage for storage.
The owners fondly recall climbing trees, building cubbies, and enjoying fishing on the Goulburn River from the beach behind the homestead.
They stated, “What we cherish most about Elouera is the family gatherings. Our children love exploring paddocks in Dad’s jeep.”
Additionally, they enjoy floating down the Goulburn River on tyre tubes, creating lasting memories during their visits.
The sellers mentioned their favorite spot is the front veranda. It’s a peaceful location with stunning views over the hills.
They also treasure the shearing shed, where Gail held a bush band with square dancing for her 21st birthday celebration.
Moreover, it’s where Shelley was married. Even now, they often gather in the shearing shed to share nibbles and drinks.
Nutrien Harcourts Alexandra principal, Belinda Hocking, noted that the property’s almost one-kilometre Goulburn River frontage is its major attraction, along with privacy.
She remarked, “It’s been exceptionally well maintained over the years. The home features 13-foot ceilings and picture rails from the early 1900s.”
Furthermore, it showcases beautiful Australian architecture from the Federation era, which adds to its historical charm and character.
“There are lovely leadlight features, and each room includes an open fireplace. The overall ambiance is simply amazing,” Ms. Hocking concluded.
