Hawthorn has Melbourne’s highest private school density,
Some suburbs naturally gain desirability over time. Conversely, Hawthorn was intentionally designed to be an attractive place to live.
According to the website Victorian Places, Hawthorn’s appeal to the middle class is well-documented. This appeal is particularly evident in its early adoption of private schools.
By 1890, Hawthorn was recognized for its abundance of private schools per capita. Notably, it ranked alongside St Kilda in this regard.
This focus on education clearly catered to families residing in the area. These families were often composed of individuals engaged in business throughout Melbourne.
Over time, Hawthorn has maintained its competitive edge in Melbourne’s real estate market. It effortlessly showcases its aspirational status to visitors and residents alike.
A stroll down the vibrant Glenferrie Road shopping strip illustrates this well. However, Glenferrie Road isn’t the only retail highlight in Hawthorn.
In addition, a section of Church Street in Hawthorn West features a diverse array of furniture and design stores. Among these is Frey, known for its trendy selection of homewares and artworks.
Frey also offers styling services for those who prefer to outsource home design. This adds to the suburb’s appeal as a destination for stylish living.
According to Frey owner Isabella Patterson, one significant advantage of Hawthorn West is its proximity to other affluent suburbs in Melbourne.
She notes that clients from Ivanhoe, Heidelberg, Doncaster, and Templestowe find it easy to access the store via the Eastern Freeway.
Additionally, clients from Stonnington and Bayside appreciate its convenient location, as it’s just across the river from where these suburbs converge.
Nearby, The Feel Good Hood wellness center offers services for both body and mind. They provide movement and meditation classes, along with ice baths and infrared saunas.
“Hawthorn is an excellent location for this type of business,” says owner Shawn Abeysiri, who opened the center a year ago.
He emphasizes that it’s a family-oriented, safe area where people aspire to live their best lives.
