Tiny homes inspire hope for at-risk teens,
A community of one-bedroom pods in Adelaide aims to assist vulnerable young people in their transition to independent living effectively.
This $3 million government initiative is designed as a “small village,” featuring ten self-contained tiny homes for at-risk teens.
Moreover, the community specifically targets teenagers aged 16 to 18 who are transitioning out of the care system.
Each pod will include a private bedroom, a kitchenette, and a living room, all within a compact 17-square-metre space.
Additionally, Junction, an affordable housing provider, is collaborating with the state government to bring this important project to fruition.
“Young people in care often lack family support, which is the most challenging aspect of their situation,” Emmarita, a 24-year-old entrepreneur, explained.
“In this community, residents aren’t alone; they can forge friendships with others who may become family later in life,” she added. “I truly wish I had experienced this.”
Furthermore, besides the individual pods, young residents will enjoy access to an open green space featuring common areas for socializing and learning.
Additionally, Junction staff will be present to offer support and run various programs tailored for these adolescents.

Flinders University and the local TAFE will be located nearby, ensuring residents can easily access ongoing education and training opportunities.
“The young people moving in may feel nervous, as this experience is unfamiliar and unusual for many 16-year-olds,” Emmarita noted.
However, the essence of this community is that they won’t face these challenges alone, fostering support and connection.
Katrine Hildyard, Minister for Child Protection, believes the Tiny Homes Campus “could evolve into a world-leading model for similar initiatives.”
“Young people exiting care truly deserve a safe and welcoming place to call home,” Hildyard expressed in a statement.
Furthermore, she noted that finding affordable accommodation for young individuals transitioning from care can be exceptionally challenging.
Consequently, Hildyard emphasized their pride in partnering with Junction to advance this innovative project for vulnerable youth.
