New highrise to dominate Darling Harbour,
Looking across Sydney’s shimmering harbour, you might be captivated by the stunning water views and the nearby buildings.
Only the finest architecture lines the harbour’s edge. Soon, a new highrise will proudly stand in Darling Harbour.
Harbourside by Mirvac is a remarkable 48-level residential tower located just beyond Sydney’s central business district.
This $2 billion precinct will feature retail and dining options, along with over 10,000 square metres of public open space.
Included in this space are a waterfront promenade and a beautiful park for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The 263 apartments and penthouses at Harbourside are designed by some of Australia’s most talented architects and designers.
Notably, Jeff Copolov, a hall-of-famer from the Design Institute of Australia and a multi-award winner, contributed significantly.
Copolov, who serves as interior design director at Bates Smart, is recognized for iconic Melbourne landmarks like Crown Casino.
However, he is also familiar with Sydney and its unique architectural landscape.
For Harbourside, he drew inspiration from the site’s rich history and the striking beauty of local sandstone.
“Sydney is famous for its remarkable sandstone, embankments, and sedimentary rock, which are often used in our public buildings,” he explains.
Additionally, sandstone interacts beautifully with water and connects to a pre-colonization period when Aboriginal tribes thrived in the area.
This location served as a vital hub for food, fresh water, and saltwater resources, symbolizing life and growth.
The warmth of sandstone is reflected in the ochre hues of the benchtops. This is one of the color palettes available.
Another palette leans towards various shades of green, offering buyers a choice that complements their preferences and style.
“One color scheme draws inspiration from the sandstone hues and ochres,” Copolov explains. “It captures the movement seen in sandstone.”
Additionally, the key stones used are signature elements, enhancing the overall design and aesthetic of the space, he notes.

“The alternative color scheme features softer hues of green, silver, and grey. These tones enhance the island benches and vanities.”
Additionally, the remaining palettes for walls, floors, and carpets consist of neutral, soft tones. This allows the stunning stones to shine.
The architecture is a collaborative effort between Australia’s Hassell and Norway’s Snøhetta. Both firms worked together to create a harmonious design.
They received support from cultural design practice Djinjama and heritage advisors Bila Heritage. Their insights greatly informed the architectural and landscaping choices.
Liz Westgarth, global managing director of Hassell, states that this input enriched the overall design. Indigenous narratives inspired the connection to the land.
“Our design celebrates the site’s history while honoring its rich cultural narratives,” she explains. “We aim for a timeless, contextual response.”
Before colonization, the area was called Tumbalong. It was a plentiful source of seafood for the Gadigal and Wangal peoples.
This connection between the land and its people is reflected in the interiors. Public art by Indigenous artists and cultural interpretation are integrated throughout.
Harbourside is conveniently located near the Darling Harbour ferry and a light rail station. Additionally, it’s a five-minute walk from the city center.
Once Pyrmont Metro Station opens in 2032, accessibility will improve further. This strategic location is highly desirable for future residents.
“As we engage with the market, it’s fascinating to see the inquiries,” states Stuart Penklis, Mirvac’s chief executive of development.
He adds that potential buyers are seeking connectivity to the CBD and public transport options. Harbourside will offer unparalleled connectivity now and in the future.
The prime location and harborside views have attracted interest from rightsizers and upgraders. Many are currently residing in city apartments, according to Penklis.
Harbourside is on track for completion in 2027, promising an exciting future for its residents.
