Unique waterfront home in Berowra Waters,
If you’ve ever escaped Sydney for a weekend at a Hawkesbury River cottage, you’re familiar with its serenity.
There is no traffic, except for the occasional sound of watercraft passing by, and no retail distractions or crowds.
Marra Marra Creek is a peaceful stretch of water where the Hawkesbury River meets Berowra Creek, only accessible by boat.
Here, around 30 homes are nestled among the dense bushland along the northern shore of Marramarra National Park.
Among these homes is Marra Marra Shack, a modest, off-grid cabin designed by Swiss architect Leopold Banchini.
Banchini was inspired by the wild and beautiful landscape surrounding the creek, which influenced the cabin’s unique design.
Marra Marra Shack won the 2023 Australian Timber Design Award for its innovative use of recycled timber materials.
The cabin was built entirely by hand using ironbark, spotted gum, and recycled turpentine timbers sourced from a nearby jetty.
The exterior features non-combustible fibre cement cladding, which complies with strict fire rating requirements for safety and durability.

“I think it’s really a place where you can just cosy up and escape,” says agent Caelia Collins.
“You can light the fire, enjoy some marshmallows, and sip cups of cocoa while relaxing in peace.”
Peats Bite restaurant is just five minutes away by boat, and they offer a pickup service for guests.
If you’re in the mood, you can enjoy a fancy degustation lunch at the restaurant, adding to the experience.
Collins anticipates interest from city professionals seeking a weekend retreat to “tap out” and disconnect from their busy lives.
She also expects potential buyers who may want a unique property to use as a holiday rental.
